Garden Makeover: Raj Green Patio, Sleeper Wall & New Turf, Stone

This garden in Stone had a long raised planter held up by an old concrete retaining wall, and a tired lawn that had seen better days. We opened the garden up with a new patio, rebuilt the remaining bed with timber sleepers, laid a fresh lawn and replaced the old fence.

Before

Stage 1: Excavation

The old raised planter ran for around 20m with a 400mm-high concrete retaining wall. We fully excavated the wall, and removed part of the bed completely to make room for the new patio. The rest of the bed stayed in the same place, ready for its new wall.

Stage 2: Sleeper retaining wall

We replaced the concrete wall with green treated timber sleepers, giving the remaining bed a softer, more natural edge that suits the garden.

Stage 3: Raj Green Indian stone patio

Where part of the bed used to be, we laid a 30m² patio in Raj Green Indian stone, in a four-size mix for a natural, random pattern. The joints were finished with Titan resin grout for a neat, hard-wearing finish.

Stage 4: New lawn

Finally, we took up the old, tired turf and laid 60m² of new turf, giving the garden a fresh green lawn to go with the new patio.

Stage 5: New fencing

To finish the garden off, we took down the old fence and replaced it with 6 new fence panels on concrete posts and concrete gravel boards. With no timber in contact with the ground, the new fence won’t rot at the base, and a single panel can be swapped out if it’s ever damaged.
