Turfing & Artificial Grass

website adminServices

Do you want a traditional lawn, or something that’s the ultimate in low maintenance? We lay new turf and install artificial grass in Stone and across Staffordshire, and we can combine the two with paving, decking and planting as part of a bigger garden project.

New turf

A good lawn starts with good soil. We clear the old grass, weeds and roots, bring in fresh topsoil where needed, level the ground and then lay the new turf. On one front garden we used 20 tonnes of topsoil under a hard-wearing “stadium” turf to give it a good nutritional bed. We also added Black Ice decorative stone, a slate fascia and slate stepping stones to match the porch.

Artificial grass

Artificial grass stays green all year and doesn’t need mowing, feeding or watering. We prepare a solid, free-draining base so it stays flat and doesn’t puddle. It can also go where real grass can’t. We’ve laid over 30m² of artificial grass directly on top of an existing timber deck, finished with galvanised steel edging.

Turf or artificial grass?

  • Choose real turf if you want a natural lawn, don’t mind mowing, and want to spend less up front.
  • Choose artificial grass if you want low maintenance, have a shady or heavily used area, or want grass on a surface like decking.

Turf and artificial grass FAQs

Can artificial grass be laid on decking or concrete?

Yes, in the right conditions. We’ve installed artificial grass directly over timber decking. The surface needs to be sound and able to drain.

Does artificial grass need any maintenance?

Very little. An occasional brush to lift the fibres, clearing leaves and a rinse now and then will keep it looking fresh.

When is the best time to lay new turf?

Spring and autumn are ideal, because the ground is moist and it’s not too hot. We avoid laying turf on frozen or waterlogged ground.
